Meet the Bittel in Bittel Books & Taxes

While working at a national accounting firm, Carlie Bittel discovered she loved helping clients gain clarity and confidence in their finances—but not the stuffy, old-school mindset of the corporate world.

In 2013, she traded in the business suit for a bowtie and founded Bittel Books & Taxes, an Austin-based accounting firm with a people-first approach. Today, the Bittel team has grown, bringing fresh energy, modern thinking, and a friendly face to the world of accounting.

Carlie Bittel, CPA

Founder & Tax Director

A problem-solver at heart, Carlie is passionate about helping fellow entrepreneurs, small business owners and individuals grow and succeed. She approaches every client with honesty, transparency, and respect to build valuable partnerships. She believes in people helping people, and having a little fun along the way. Carlie holds a Masters of Accounting from the University of Kansas and is a licensed CPA in Texas, Kansas, and Missouri. She specializes in small business tax planning and preparation.

Cassie Schultz, EA

Tax Department Lead

Cassie is a highly skilled professional with over 25 years in the accounting and tax industry. Throughout her career, she has focused on serving the needs of individuals and small to mid-sized businesses. She is committed to helping her clients optimize their savings through strategic tax planning and insightful business consulting. Navigating the complexities of accounting and tax can be overwhelming, which is why Cassie places great emphasis on empowering her clients with the knowledge and confidence they need to make informed financial decisions.

With her MBA in Accounting and Enrolled Agent status with the IRS, Cassie brings a wealth of knowledge to every client interaction. Beyond her professional achievements, Cassie also enjoys the challenge of solving Rubik’s Cubes, so feel free to strike up a conversation about speedcubing when you meet her. Outside of work, Cassie finds joy in the memories created in new adventures with her family.

Carin Mattson

Team Operations Director

Carin is an experienced Administrator and Bookkeeper working with and for small businesses for many years. She is committed to providing excellent service with a keen eye for details and critical thinking skills. In her spare time, Carin enjoys playing with her grandchildren, researching genealogy and crafting. She can also be found at a good car show or concert.

Laura Hirschfeld, CPA

Tax Accountant

Laura is a CPA and MBA with many years of experience in both public accounting (tax) and working with nonprofits. She loves helping people learn how accounting can be a useful tool in running their businesses and lives, and not just a painful prelude to a tax return. Laura holds an MBA from Tulane University and a BA in Anthropology from Duke University and is a licensed CPA in Texas and Maryland. When she’s not working she is reading, crocheting, cooking, or possibly in ballet class.

Taylor Litton

Team Operations Director

Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Taylor is our internal guru and firecracker of the firm! She started her journey in the accounting industry in 2014 and has a strong background in bookkeeping, administration, and operations. She thrives on aligning business objectives with comprehensive administration knowledge to achieve maximum operational success and boost efficiency within the firm. When she is not wearing her internal guru crown, she enjoys spending time with her two dogs and cat, yoga, and adding to her growing plant collection.

Klodia Thomas

Accountant I

With experience in accounting and administration, she specializes in client relations and providing excellent communication skills and customer service. When she is not working, she is spending time with family, cooking and traveling.

Alex McLelland

Senior Accounting Manager

This isn’t Alex’s first rodeo! He worked as a part-time bookkeeper for Bittel Books for over two years before coming on board full-time in May of 2023. Alex brings a wealth of small business accounting experience to the team, having handled the books for many different types of clients ranging from hotels, to schools, to restaurants, and more. Alex earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He spends his spare time geeking out on crossword puzzles, building Lego, playing the piano, and cuddling with his adorable pup named Daisy.

Rebecca Daniel, EA

Accounting & Compliance Coordinator

Rebecca is an Enrolled Agent with over 20 years of experience in the accounting field. She has also spent several years helping clients negotiate IRS audit issues. She is passionate about educating clients so that taxes are a lot less scary. In her free time, she takes care of her small farm and loves going fishing and boating at the lake.

Jenna Fehring, CPA

Tax Accountant

Jenna got her start in public accounting at a national firm after earning her Masters of Accountancy from Texas State University. She is passionate about helping small businesses by making tax planning and preparation more approachable. When she’s off the clock, Jenna loves to explore the mountains and hike the trails in Colorado, and spend time with her dog, Jessie.

Misty Herring

Accountant I

Misty brings with her a wealth of bookkeeping and accounting knowledge from working with small and large companies from many different industries. In her spare time, she likes to hang out with her family and friends. She also enjoys working in her garden, canning her own food, making her own skin and hair care, and cooking from scratch!

Kodi Metcalf

Systems Operations Director

With a foundation in healthcare and a passion for business, Kodi transitioned into the world of leadership and operations after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Oklahoma State University, with a minor in Business Sustainability and Management Consulting. She later earned her Master of Business Administration from Washington University. Over the past decade, Kodi has built a career supporting businesses and leadership teams across a variety of industries, driven by a passion for creating efficient processes, fostering strong relationships, and helping organizations grow with confidence.

Outside of work, Kodi enjoys spending time with her toddler, Lewie, traveling, reading, and making memories with her dogs, Khaos and Mischief. These experiences help bring balance, perspective, and enthusiasm to both her professional and personal life.

Randa Miller

Executive Admin Manager

With over seven years of experience in the accounting and administration world, Randa has honed her expertise from small businesses to big corporations. After taking some time to raise her babies, she’s back in action as our Tax Administrator here at Bittel Books. Her eclectic experiences and dedication make her a valuable asset to our team. When she’s not on the clock, you can find Randa traveling with her family, exploring thrift stores for unique finds, or curled up with a good book.

Patti Jo Searer, CPA

Tax Accountant

Patti is a CPA with many years of experience and knowledge in both private and public accounting as well as taxes. She worked years as a Controller for a private company before returning to public accounting. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting as well as a Minor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems.

She enjoys working with small business owners and teaching them new techniques, strategies, and solutions to make their businesses more efficient and profitable. When not working, she helps with their family cattle operations, plays with her three dogs and numerous goats, loves on her kids and grandchildren, and spends time camping and fishing.

Regina West

Senior Tax Manager

Regina has a master’s degree in taxation and extensive experience supporting individuals, small businesses and complex entities. She brings a strong background in tax preparation, bookkeeping and compliance, with a focus on helping her clients feel confident and supported in their financial lives. When not at work she enjoys traveling with her family, tending to her small farm and hiking.
